Brief information on the area
Tbilisi is the capital of Georgia, translated from Georgian as “warm source”, the old name is Tiflis. This is the largest city in Georgia, located on the banks of the Kura River with a population of more than 1 million people. The city was founded in the 5th century. Tbilisi is the ancient cultural center of Georgia. In the southeastern part of the city is its historical core - the Old Town with narrow streets that have retained the features of medieval buildings. Here you can see the ruins of the citadel of Narikal, later completed by the Turks in the 16th-17th centuries, the stone church of Anchiskhati, the church of Metekhi, the cathedrals of Sioni and Sameba.
Mestia is located in Upper Svaneti, the center of the Mestian municipality of Samegrelo - Zemo Svaneti province in Georgia. It is located on the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus, 128 km northeast of Zugdidi. The height above sea level is about 1500 m. The population is about 2500 people.
Mestia is a center of alpine tourism and mountaineering; from here begin climbing the serious mountain peaks: Ushba, Dzhangi-tau, Shkhara, etc. Here is the house museum and a bust of the native Mestia, the famous climber M.V. Khergiani.
Mestia is a very promising ski resort in Georgia, there are two ski areas:
- Hatsvali, located at an altitude of 1865 meters above sea level. The resort began operations in 2011, after the opening of a small airport in Mestia in December 2010.
- Tetnuldi, located at an altitude of 2260 meters above sea level. The opening of the Tetnuldi resort took place in December 2016. The resort features stunning views and the widest opportunities for freeriding.
Ushguli, the highest and most permanently inhabited village in Europe, at an altitude of 2200 m.
